A bit tricky as it can be more unpredictable when removing & changing unnatural pigments. We start by removing the old color using a lightener which could leave hair somewhat dry. Controlling the time we leave the lightener on your hair minimizes dryness, this can leave in unwanted pigments left from the old dye that are difficult to remove…usually a brassy, reddish tone. Once the hair has been lightened as much as possible with the lightener, a toner (which is actually just a mild color) is used to counter these unwanted pigments. You have to remember that there is no miracle cure…sometimes it can take a few appointments to get the final look.
Balayage has become a popular technique for highlights. The reason our colorists love it is because it allows them creative freedom with coloring. Balayage is the technique of applying color completely by hand rather than using foils or any other highlighting tools. Ombre is the effect of making the ends of the hair lighter than the roots by transitioning from dark to light. “Ombre” simply means shadow or shade in French. Our clients love Ombre because, besides looking amazing when done correctly, it allows them to go much longer without having to do touch ups.

If you have been coloring your hair blonde or light: it is stripped of natural pigment which opens the cuticle & leaves hair strands porous. Hair can be more porous in some areas than others which effect levels of color absorption. An opposite problem that sometimes occurs is that the ends of the hair are so dry and stripped that they can’t hold on to color. This means the ends end up looking faded. Another potential issue is that the hair ends up too “flat”–too ashy and without any shine. These are mostly preventable problems when done by our colorist and with a quality hair color line such as Loreal, but it may mean a few processes. Our colorist have experience with color corrections, we care about your hair & we always aim to minimize damage as much as possible!

This is the ideal start. It is much easier to predict what underlying tones there will be & what color formulation needs to be used to get you to your desired shade. If you want to go quite light, your hair can initially feel somewhat dry because the natural oils are removed along with your natural pigment. Your hair should soften up once the natural oils return, as long as it has not been damaged. It is always a good idea to do it a little at a time, in about two or three appointments, because this gives your hair a chance to replenish the oils between appointments. It also gives a nicer effect since it provides the hair more dimension when you lighten it a few times.
